From February 10 to 12, 2025, the historic city of Viterbo hosted the tenth edition of the Energy Finance Italia Workshop (EFI 10), organized at the University of Tuscia.
Now in its tenth year, Energy Finance Italia has established itself as a leading academic forum in Italy for research at the intersection of energy, finance, and quantitative modeling. Since its first edition, EFI has brought together scholars, analysts, and policymakers to discuss the latest developments in energy market dynamics, risk management, and sustainable investment strategies.
The workshop opened with welcoming remarks by Professor Tiziana Laureti, the next Rector of the University of Tuscia, who emphasized the growing importance of interdisciplinary research in tackling the twin challenges of energy sustainability and financial innovation.
She was joined by Professor Carlo Mari, founder of EFI, member of the EFI 10 Scientific Committee, and long-time contributor to the initiative, who reflected on EFI’s evolution over the past decade — from a small national meeting into a recognized international network of energy finance experts.
Their opening messages set the tone for a three-day program designed to foster discussion, collaboration, and intellectual exchange in an open and collegial environment.
EFI 10 preserved its unique format of non-parallel sessions, a hallmark feature that distinguishes the workshop from larger academic conferences.
This structure allows participants to attend every presentation, encouraging a shared dialogue across topics and disciplines — from econometrics and network science to environmental economics and data analytics.
The event also served as a platform to announce a Special Issue of the Journal of Commodity Markets dedicated to “The Energy Transition,” inviting high-quality contributions from EFI participants.
In recognition of emerging talent, the EFI 2025 Prize — valued at €500 — was awarded to the best paper by a young researcher, underscoring the workshop’s commitment to supporting the next generation of scholars in energy and finance.
Over ten editions, Energy Finance Italia has built a strong and vibrant academic community focused on the economics and finance of energy systems, bridging theoretical modeling and applied research.
The workshop now draws participation from leading universities and research institutions across Italy and abroad, including economists, mathematicians, physicists, and data scientists working on the complex problems of energy transition and market design.
EFI 10 reaffirmed the initiative’s reputation as a catalyst for scientific collaboration — an event where quantitative research meets practical policy implications.
Discussions during the 2025 edition reflected the evolving global context: volatile energy prices, the accelerating shift toward renewables, and the increasing role of AI and data science in forecasting, risk assessment, and sustainable finance.
The workshop also highlighted the importance of integrating academic research with policy and industry perspectives, aiming to translate scientific insights into actionable strategies for
As EFI enters its second decade, the workshop continues to strengthen its mission: to provide an open, high-level space for interdisciplinary debate on energy and finance, fostering collaboration across academia, institutions, and industry.
The success of EFI 10 in Viterbo stands as a testament to the dedication of its organizers and participants, and to the growing recognition that energy finance research is central to shaping the global transition toward a sustainable future.
